The heightened war against drug cartels and gangs in Mexico, which began in 2006, has already claimed more than 55,000 lives.  More than 3,000 police officers and soldiers have died, which is equal to the total number of coalition soldiers who have died in the war in Afghanistan.

The continued violence and mayhem being caused by drug cartels and gangs has created a humanitarian crisis as people try to live out their daily lives in what has effectively become a conflict zones.

In Tampico, Mexico a local organization dedicated to creating peace through sports called Promotora Mexicana de Valores Deportivos, decided that they had to do something more than their regular sports programming to address this crisis. Because so many of the people living in these violent conflict zones are poor with very limited access to medical care, Promotora Mexicana de Valores Deportivos decided that they would do something new.  They began to work to provide medical assistance.  Then, they gathered medical supplies to donate to those who are working to provide medical care.

Promotora Mexicana de Valores Deportivos was able to provide hundreds of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and canes.  They were also able to supply a large number of first aid kits.

They are hoping that their efforts will help to heal the local community and those who have been affected by the violent conflict and rising crime.

The second nominee for Best Up and Coming Act is Inter-religious Harmony in Action

Our human identity is deeply tied to culture and religions.  Cultural and religious differences can sometime become a cause of human suffering when we fail to understand and embrace each other’s differences and conflicts arise.  Throughout human existence, these sorts of inter-religious conflicts have caused a tremendous amount of human suffering.

In Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India some local leaders have come together with all of this in mind.  They have created a new movement called inter-religious harmony in action. Their goal is to work against prejudice, hatred and discrimination and to foster instead, a spirit of mutual respect, coexistence, and tolerance.

Every year, they have pledged to celebrate World Inter-Faith Harmony Week together.  Their first joint celebration included interfaith prayer, concerts for interfaith harmony and family entertainment.  Many faiths were represented.  The initial was so successful that they are now planning more celebration throughout the year to build, strengthen, and foster understanding.
