Winner to Be Awarded in Monte Carlo by Nobel Peace Prize Winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel

The PeaceJam Foundation’s One Billion Acts of Peace began with a simple message: “Everyone matters. Everyone can make a difference. And together, we are unstoppable.” Today we took steps to honor that message. This year the PeaceJam Foundation and One Billion Acts of Peace honor this message by officially announcing the Hero Award Semifinalists and opening online voting to the public. To see the Hero Semifinalists and vote click here.

This year’s awards will recognize outstanding service in five categories including Best Youth Act, Best Non-Profit Act, Best Business Act, Best University Act and Best Up and Coming Peacemaker.

One Billion Acts of Peace Hero Awards is a rare event in today’s world, as Nobel Peace Price Winner Rigoberta Menchú commented during her recent visit to the Google campus,  “One Billion Acts of Peace shows everyone, young or old, that they have the power to make a difference.” By bringing together Nobel Prize winners such as His Holiness The Dali Lama and Desmond Tutu, industry leaders such as Google and everyday people we are creating a generation of heroes.”

The Hero Awards recognizes the importance of action. It can be a huge effort worthy of a Nobel award or a young child’s earliest efforts to help a neighbor. One Billion Acts of Peace acknowledges human dignity at all levels, because even the most basic efforts can have huge consequences. Menchú puts it this way “In difficult times, it is easy to forget that we all can enact change, no matter how powerless we may feel. Addressing injustice, inequality, the environment – it all starts with everyone believing in their power to change the world.”

Winners of the Hero Award will be announced on May 21st online. Winners will be honored at the Hero Award ceremony on June 14, 2015 in Monte Carlo. This year’s award ceremony will be led by Nobel Laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel of Argentina, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980 for his leadership for human rights and true democracy for the people of Latin America.

One Billion Acts of Peace welcomes all of you to follow along and vote for who you feel deserves the Hero of the Year award in each category.  So check out the videos of our Semifinalists and place your votes now. Voting ends May 20th – so don’t delay!
