Alleviation of Extreme Poverty

Universities and Students join together for peace

15th May 2015

As promised, I’m back to introduce the Hero Award Nominees for Best University Act. It truly excites me that the this transatlantic award represents universities and students from North America and Europe. Without further ado, I’d like to welcome the nominees to the 1 Billion Acts of Peace campaign.

Who will you vote for?

#1 University of Winchester
#2 Stratford University

The University of Winchester is our first nominee for Best University Act. The University of Winchester is a public new university based in Winchester, Hampshire, England and is leading others to achieve results in providing environmental sustainability.

The greenhouse gasses caused by human activities have had a huge impact on our environment.  Changes, as scientists predicted as a result of global climate change, are now occurring. Glaciers are melting, seas are rising, and weather is more extreme.

The University of Winchester, located in Winchester England, decided to do something to reduce their carbon footprint. Because what we do today, matters tomorrow.

They have already achieved measurable results.

  • Emissions have been reduced by 30%
  • 240 tons of waste has been diverted from landfills
  • 92% of all campus electricity is from green sources
  • Waste oil is being turned into biodiesel
  • University vehicles are running on cleaner energy.
  • A green roof has even been installed on the top of the Stripe building on King Alfred Campus.

Thanks to the efforts of The University of Winchester, our children’s children can hope for a better tomorrow.

Our second nominee for the Best University Act is Stratford University from Falls Church, Virginia in the USA.

Students at Stratford University in Fairfax, Virginia became concerned when they read about a sharp rise in poverty in the local community over the past decade.

Over 180,000 students are enrolled in Fairfax County Schools and 29% of these students are now living at or below the official US poverty level.

So, these young university students put their heads together and decided to create an annual event that would help the children and families who were struggling in their community.  They created a new program – an annual drive to collect much needed school supplies for local children.  They began to collect notebooks, pencil, crayons, scissors, binders and much more, plus the backpacks to put them all in.

They were able to put together more than 3000 backpacks full of school supplies which then they donated to 50 local area schools.

And next year, the students at Stratford University hope to do even more.  Together, with Stratford University, we can help those in need build a better future for themselves and their local communities.
