4 Ways to Do Good Over the Holidays

1: Teach Your Kids the Importance of Giving

Teach your kids the importance of giving this holiday season.  Provide them with a pre-determined amount of money, and challenge them to find an organization or individual in need to support. Visit Billion Acts or a site like Charity Navigator to find organizations doing great work worldwide.

2: Use Amazon Smile

Sign up with Amazon Smile and choose a charity of your choice that will benefit each time you make a purchase on Amazon. Be sure to use the smile.amazon.com URL instead of amazon.com. This is an easy way to support your favorite charity, and you can choose a new organization at the end of each year to spread the love around.

3: Stock Up on Gift Cards

Stock up on $5 or $10 gift cards (Amazon, American Express or Target, for example), and hand them out to people that you interact with often: a bank teller; a cashier at the supermarket you frequent; your favorite barista. Passing along a gift card with a simple “Happy Holidays!” wish will almost always bring a smile to someone’s face and inspire them to pay it forward.

4: Recurring Monthly Donations

A new survey shows that 69 percent of Americans would skip exchanging gifts if their family and friends agreed to it. As you plan your gift list for the holidays, consider donations instead of actual presents. For a special gift for someone (or for yourself) set up a recurring monthly donation for the organizations you most want to support – like BillionActs. Even a recurring $5 donation can make a huge difference.
